About Splinescan
The goal of Project Splinescan is to develop effective, open source 3D scanning tools for science and research.
The project encompasses all methods of object scanning, and places emphasis on the portability of code between operating systems,
and on the optimisation of code for low-power hardware.
A sneak preview of the new scanning software can be found in this zip file. The code is not complete, but it does work well enough to demonstrate a few of the functions that the scanning system can provide. Please do not email asking for instructions on getting this code to work, because instructions will be provided at the end of March. You will need to have python, pil and VideoCapture modules installed on your system to use the scanner on windows, or python, pil and streamer installed to use the system with linux.
A Thousand Apologies
I know you’ve been waiting for the new software, and I told you it would be ready by Monday last week. The fact is that I managed to get myself a concussion, and I’ve been mostly bed bound for the entire week. I’m on the mend now, and I’m going in early tomorrow to get the software completed. Rest assured, I will be avoiding banging my head in future.
New Build Instructions, and Project Delays
I mentioned in a previous post that the project would be delayed over the holiday period. I will be spending significant time on the project next week, and hope to have a software release available for you then. In the meantime, I wanted to post the fantastic new build instructions for the turntable, as published in Make magazine.
O’Reilly have been kind enough to give me a link to the online version of the magazine, so you can read the article. This link is at http://www.make-digital.com/make/vol21/?pg=56&pm=2&u1=friend, and I hope you enjoy reading it.
The Festive Period
Just a little note to say that although I said the new software would be ready by the end of December, I’m running a little late because of the Christmas holidays. In short, I forgot that my office at the university would be locked, so I’ll have to play catch-up over January.
In the mean time, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
Don’t forget to take a look at the construction articles in Make magazine (issue 21) if you’re interested in building your own scanner!
